Description

Sandakphu Phalut trek takes you to the rewarding Sandakphu peak, with views of 4 of the 5 highest mountains in the world. The trekkers get to witness the enormity of the Makalu, Lhotse, Kanchenjunga and Mount Everest from the trek. The trek is an easy to moderate category trek in terms of difficulty. It can be attempted by first time trekkers with moderate level of fitness, if they do not have any ailments. Add to this what the trek offers and this makes it a must do for every trekker. The trek is geographically located in West Bengal, bordering Nepal & Sikkim. Sandakphu and Phalut are two ridge tops respectively after which the trek in named. A drive of 104 Km to Dhotrey in around 4 hours takes us to the starting point of the trek. The trek can even be started from Manebhanjang, but the route from Dhotrey has lesser crowd, at least for the first day, as both the trails eventually confluence at Tumling. A tea house based trek, it comes on the easier side owing to the prior arrangements.

Short Itinerary

Day 1 - Drive from NJP / Bagdogra to Sepi
Day 2 - Trek from Sepi to Samanden
Day 3 - Trek from Samanden to Molley
Day 4 - Trek from Molley to Sabargram via Phalut
Day 5 - Trek from Sabargram to Aal
Day 6 - Trek from Aal to Gurdum via Sandakphu
Day 7 - Trek from Gurdum to Sepi. Drive back to NJP/Bagdogra

Detailed Itinerary

Day 1

Drive from NJP / Bagdogra to Sepi

Drive: 130 km | Duration: 7 hours

Pick up from NJP (9.30 AM) or Bagdogra (10.30 AM). Cost Rs.6,500 per vehicle (shared). Reach base camp Sepi by 6.00 PM. Alternatively, pick up from Darjeeling (12.30 PM) is available at Rs.4,000 per person.

Day 2

Trek from Sepi to Samanden

Distance: 14 km | Altitude: 6,400 ft to 7,760 ft

Moderate ascent with steep sections. Trail descends after Ramam. Sufficient water sources available throughout the route.

Day 3

Trek from Samanden to Molley

Distance: 10 km | Altitude: 7,760 ft to 11,220 ft

Difficult, steep ascent till Molley. Carry 2 litres of water and refill at available sources as there is no flat terrain today.

Day 4

Trek from Molley to Sabargram via Phalut

Distance: 15 km | Max Alt: 11,810 ft

Easy walking day. Refill water at Phalut (3.5 hours in). Enjoy mostly level walks with a few undulating sections.

Day 5

Trek from Sabargram to Aal

Distance: 12 km | Altitude: 11,450 ft to 11,570 ft

Moderate trek over hillocks. Water is scarce on this route; carry at least 2 litres from the start.

Day 6

Trek from Aal to Gurdum via Sandakphu

Distance: 10 km | Alt Loss: to 7,395 ft

Gradual descent all day. Best views of Kanchenjunga. Carry 2 litres of water from Sandakphu.

Day 7

Trek Sepi & Drive back to NJP/Bagdogra

Trek: 4 km | Drive: 130 km

Return to NJP/Bagdogra by 8.00 PM. Transport cost Rs.6,500 per vehicle (shared). Alternatively, drop at Darjeeling available.

Important Points
  • Mandatory: Carry copy of photo ID for forest check posts.
  • Stay: Lodges at base camp, Tea Houses on trek (except Molley/Sabargram where tents are used).
  • Cloakroom available at base camp for excess luggage.
  • Note: Triple sharing may be implemented in peak season due to global tent supply chain issues.
